Kenya’s failure to secure the 2025 CHAN (African Nations Championship) tournament has dealt a major blow to the country’s hopes of hosting major international sporting events.

At the center of this failure is Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, whose incompetence and alleged involvement in corruption have contributed directly to Kenya losing the prestigious tournament to Rwanda.

Murkomen’s failure to sign the CAF (Confederation of African Football) hosting guarantee on time is just the tip of the iceberg.

Behind the scenes, his actions, in collaboration with key figures like Principal Secretary Peter Tum and Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto, have raised serious concerns about the mismanagement of funds and the country’s declining prospects in sports.

When Murkomen took over as Sports CS, expectations were high, especially after the aggressive campaign to secure CHAN for Kenya.

However, instead of overseeing the rapid development of stadiums like Kasarani and Nyayo, he allowed the projects to stall.

Despite being allocated substantial funds to fast-track upgrades, the renovations moved at a snail’s pace, signaling serious mismanagement.

But while the country’s sporting infrastructure languished, Murkomen’s attention seemed to be elsewhere allegedly focused on his ties to the controversial Adani Group which has been accused of bribery and much more.

Reports indicate that Murkomen, in his capacity as Sports CS, was deeply involved with the group, which has been linked to numerous corruption scandals globally.

His association with such a company raises red flags about possible conflicts of interest and unethical dealings that go beyond the sports ministry.

It is alleged that while the funds for stadium upgrades were being misappropriated, Murkomen and his allies were involved in diverting resources to projects beneficial to Adani’s interests, rather than the much-needed infrastructure for Kenya’s sporting future.

This growing web of corruption and mismanagement mirrors the very practices that Adani is known for internationally.

The Adani Group has faced scrutiny for its shady business practices, and now, Murkomen’s ties to this conglomerate make it difficult to ignore the possibility of personal and political enrichment at the expense of national development.

When CAF notified Kenya that it had lost the CHAN 2025 bid, Murkomen and his team scrambled to form committees in a desperate attempt to cover up their failures.

These hastily put-together bodies, which came too late to salvage the situation, were nothing more than a facade designed to deceive the public.

Murkomen’s quick move to announce these committees did little to hide the fact that the ministry had failed to meet basic deadlines and expectations.

In fact, the entire process of preparing for CHAN was rushed and disorganized, leaving Kenya exposed as incompetent on the international stage.

Moreover, the handling of this situation, including the attempted deflection of blame onto tribal lines, further tarnishes Murkomen’s reputation.

Murkomen and his allies, including President William Ruto and MP Oscar Sudi, have been accused of using their Kalenjin ethnicity as a shield to avoid accountability for their failures.

This tribal play not only undermines the seriousness of the situation but also reflects a government more interested in shielding its own than in addressing the systemic corruption that has undermined Kenya’s potential.

The loss of CHAN 2025 is not just a sporting setback it’s a glaring reflection of the state of governance under Murkomen.

His leadership in the sports sector, marred by his alleged connections to Adani and the mishandling of resources, raises serious questions about his ability to serve the Kenyan people.

Murkomen’s tenure as Sports CS has exposed him as a leader more focused on his personal gains and corrupt dealings than on the development of sports in Kenya.

The public deserves transparency and accountability, and Murkomen’s failure to provide this has cost Kenya a golden opportunity.

With Murkomen’s ties to Adani and his involvement in numerous questionable activities, it’s clear that Kenya cannot afford to let such individuals continue in positions of power.

If the government fails to act, Kenya’s sports sector will continue to suffer from mismanagement, corruption, and poor leadership.

Murkomen’s reputation, already tarnished by this scandal, is unlikely to recover unless the country takes a firm stand against corruption and demand proper accountability from those in power.
