DEVELOPING STORY: Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Fights Back As He Files Lawsuit To Halt Impeachment Amid Sh5.2 Billion Corruption Allegations

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken legal steps to block an ongoing impeachment motion in the National Assembly.

The motion, led by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, accuses Gachagua of corruption, amassing Sh5.2 billion in wealth during his two-year tenure, and gross misconduct.

In response, Gachagua filed a petition, claiming the accusations are politically motivated and baseless.

He argues that the process is an attempt to tarnish his reputation without credible evidence.

The impeachment motion was tabled with major backing, garnering signatures from over 291 MPs, which is well beyond the 117 required to initiate the process.

The motion lists multiple allegations, including unlawful acquisition of property and violations of the Constitution related to his duties as Deputy President.

Specific properties linked to him and his family have also been highlighted as evidence of his alleged wealth accumulation.

In his court petition, Gachagua is seeking an injunction to halt the impeachment process, arguing that his constitutional rights to a fair hearing have been violated.

He also accuses political adversaries of using the process to discredit him without a thorough investigation of the claims.

His legal team contends that the charges lack merit and are intended to mislead the public and damage his political standing.

This impeachment saga has further intensified political divisions within the ruling party.

If the motion is successful in both the National Assembly and Senate, Gachagua could be forced out of office.

However, his move to the courts is seen as a strategic delay, giving him time to gather more support within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

With public participation set to take place across all 47 counties before the final vote.

All eyes are on the Deputy President as he fights to maintain his position amid mounting pressure.

This case is symbolic of the broader political struggles and accusations of corruption that have gripped Kenya’s leadership in recent years.
