Fire Burns Down Another School Dormitory Causing Massive Destruction, Number Of Casualties Revealed

The management of Irene Girls High School in Samburu County is counting losses after a fire destroyed a 100-bed dormitory at the school, causing significant damage.

Members of the school administration told journalists on Friday that the damage was extensive, and property of unknown value had been destroyed.

There were no casualties reported from the incident. The cause of the inferno has yet to be determined, and the extent of the damage is being assessed.

Speaking to the press while picking up their children from the institution, parents expressed their concerns about the architectural designs of the dormitories and classrooms, which they claimed posed a safety risk that should have been addressed earlier.

The parents also questioned the practice of locking dormitory doors while the building housed over 100 students, emphasizing the potential risks involved.

“The dorms should have two doors so that if the fire starts on one side they can exit through another,” one parent said.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) from the Samburu West outpost was called in to lead investigations into the cause of the fire.

The officers will investigate every possibility, including whether the fire was accidental or premeditated.

The most recent school fire is just one of many that have been reported in recent years.

In July, at 8 p.m., some Kerugoya Boys High School students started a fire. Preliminary investigations revealed that this was most likely an arson case.

In the same month, dormitories at two schools in Kirinyaga County—Kiamagutu Boys High School and St Mary’s Kagio Boys High School—were burned down in separate fires.

Both investigations concluded that the fires were caused by student unrest.
