Crisis Looms In Nairobi As Governor Sakaja Accused of Massive Corruption by Former Ally

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has come under intense scrutiny following allegations of greed, corruption, and a lack of vision for the city’s future.

These accusations were made public by former Cabinet Minister Fred Gumo, a close ally of Sakaja, during an explosive interview on AB TV’s YouTube channel.

Gumo, who has a deep understanding of the workings of City Hall from his tenure as Chairman of the Nairobi City Commission from 1989 to 1992, did not mince words in his critique.

He labeled Sakaja as the “most corrupt Governor ever in Nairobi,” accusing him of prioritizing personal wealth accumulation over the welfare of Nairobi’s residents.

“Sakaja is more corrupt than his predecessors since he’s only engaged in a race to amass wealth rather than serve the people of Nairobi,” stated Gumo.

He further alleged that Sakaja is hoarding millions of shillings in containers and bedrooms across his various homes in the city, suggesting an alarming level of misappropriation of public funds.

Gumo’s revelations paint a dire picture of the current state of Nairobi’s governance. “Nairobi County is in a mess.

The problem we have today is selfishness and the leaders we have in Nairobi are competing to enrich themselves,” he lamented.

These statements highlight a significant concern about the integrity and motivations of the city’s leadership.

Adding to the controversy, Gumo himself has been a significant influence in Sakaja’s administration, having played a pivotal role in securing the appointment of his son, Mike Gumo, as the County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Innovation and Digital Economy.

This close connection between Gumo and Sakaja lends weight to his accusations, as it suggests that Gumo has an insider’s perspective on the administration’s operations.

Gumo believes that only a decisive intervention by President William Ruto can halt the alleged plundering of public coffers at City Hall.

“I believe it’s the President only who can stop this mess at City Hall and end the plundering of public coffers,” he asserted.

This call to action underscores the severity of the situation as perceived by Gumo and others critical of Sakaja’s governance.

Sakaja’s leadership has also been under fire from United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Members of Parliament from Nairobi, who have criticized his management of the city.

These internal party conflicts further complicate Sakaja’s political ambitions, particularly his aim to become the Chairman of the UDA Party in Nairobi and retain his gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections.

Despite his aspirations, he faces significant opposition from top party leaders, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

These revelations by Fred Gumo have sparked a wave of controversy and debate over the governance of Nairobi.

The accusations of corruption and self-enrichment against Governor Sakaja are serious and demand thorough investigation and accountability.

As Nairobi residents grapple with these claims, the need for transparent and effective leadership becomes ever more critical to ensure the city’s growth and prosperity.
