A woman has been charged in a Nairobi court for allegedly defrauding a man of KSh. 200,000 in a job scam that promised employment in Denmark. The Director of Public Prosecutions, often referred to as the DPP, approved the charges against Leah Wanjiku after a full investigation into the matter.
She now faces a legal battle over the accusations and will have to answer to the court in the coming months.
The case was heard before Nairobi Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai at his chambers. In court, the prosecution explained that Ms. Wanjiku received the money from a man named Alexander Kyalo Peter.
According to the police report, she pretended that she had the right connections and the ability to secure him a well-paying job in Denmark.
The prosecution firmly insists that she knew this claim was false from the very beginning. Despite knowing that she could not deliver on her promise, she allegedly went ahead and took the money anyway, leaving the victim with nothing but disappointment.
The alleged incident happened on 30th September 2025 at Absa Towers, a building located along Loita Street in the heart of Nairobi.
This court appearance is the result of a detailed investigation carried out by the authorities. The DPP reviewed all the evidence that the police had gathered and decided that there was enough reason to bring the case to court for formal prosecution.
When the charge of obtaining money by false pretences was read out to her, Ms. Wanjiku pleaded not guilty. She firmly denied the allegations and stated that she is ready to defend herself and prove her innocence before the law.
After listening to her plea, Principal Magistrate Mutai considered the terms for her release.
He granted her a bond of KSh. 100,000. This means that she is free to remain out of custody and await her trial at home, as long as she meets the conditions of the bond.
The court has already set the next date for handling this case. It will be mentioned again on 22nd September 2026. During that mention, the court will give pre-trial directions, which means it will outline exactly how the hearing will move forward and set a clear timeline for the full trial.
