Ruto’s name mentioned in meetings over proposed changes at Nairobi Hospital board

President William Ruto has reportedly been mentioned in a series of meetings where senior government operatives are alleged to have pushed for changes to the board of The Nairobi Hospital, according to details highlighted by Citizen TV.

The meetings are said to be part of a growing struggle for influence over the leadership and direction of the multi-billion shilling medical facility.

Sources familiar with the discussions claim that on March 9, 2026, the hospital’s board chair, Dr. Barcley Onyambu, was summoned to Harambee House, which houses the Office of the President.

During the meeting, he was reportedly instructed to create three vacancies on the hospital’s board.

According to the sources, Onyambu was also given names of individuals who were expected to fill the positions and told that the changes should be completed within a week.

The officials present at the meeting were described as people linked to the office of Felix Koskei.

While the details have not been publicly confirmed by the government, insiders say the discussions have raised concern among members of the hospital’s leadership.

The developments come at a time when the hospital’s board has reportedly been dealing with internal disagreements that have lasted for more than a year.

Several insiders claim that the environment within the board has become tense, with some members fearing intimidation and possible legal action.

The arrest of Dr. Job Obwaka has been described by some insiders as a major turning point in the ongoing dispute. Within the board, the arrest is being interpreted by some as part of a wider effort to influence the hospital’s leadership.

It is also alleged that other meetings have taken place at both Harambee House and State House to discuss issues surrounding the management of the hospital.

In one of the reported meetings, a senior official was quoted as saying that although Nairobi Hospital is a private institution, it still has a strong public character because of the role it plays in the country’s healthcare system.

Internal communication from the hospital has also added another layer to the unfolding situation.

In a memo dated February 6, 2026, the hospital’s company secretary, Gilbert Nyamweya, announced that Dr. Sylvester Okumu Kasuku and Moses Agoi Ondaba had been co-opted as members of the board.

Sources claim the two names had been submitted from Harambee House.Insiders further allege that there has been pressure to push for up to nine changes in the 14-member board.

Such a move would give those behind the changes a strong majority when it comes to decisions affecting the hospital and its future direction.

Kenya Hospital Association runs the hospital through a membership structure that reportedly includes more than 3,000 members.

The institution is registered as a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act, a structure that differs from companies owned through shares.

According to insiders, the ownership structure has become a central point in the ongoing dispute.

Some sources claim there has been external pressure to convert the hospital into a company limited by shares, a move that would significantly change how control of the institution is managed.

Although the association operates as a non-profit entity, the hospital itself is believed to generate between KSh1.5 billion and KSh1.6 billion in monthly revenue.

Because of this financial strength, control of the board and the ownership structure has become a high-stakes matter. Some board members also claim they have faced intimidation, including threats of arrest linked to allegations of money laundering.

A list of 34 vehicles has reportedly been cited in connection with the claims, though the hospital has maintained that most of the vehicles belong to staff members.

Within the board, the arrests of Dr. Job Obwaka and Samson Kinyanjui are now being viewed by some insiders as part of what they believe is an ongoing attempt to take control of the hospital’s leadership and operations.
