Uganda on edge after dramatic night operation reports at Bobi Wine’s residence

Reports of a dramatic late-night operation at the Magere home of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine have sparked fresh tension as the country edges closer to the 2026 general election.

According to accounts shared by people close to the National Unity Platform leader, security forces mounted a coordinated raid on Friday night that involved a military helicopter hovering above the residence.

The operation allegedly began with the disabling of surveillance cameras and power supply before officers surrounded the compound. Witnesses say ladders were placed along the perimeter walls while gates were locked from the outside, effectively sealing off the home.

Bobi Wine’s wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, is said to have alerted the media during the incident, describing a frightening scene as officers moved around the house under bright lights from the helicopter.

She claimed that shouting for help from inside the compound briefly slowed the operation, forcing the security team to pull back temporarily.

The National Unity Platform later stated that private guards assigned to protect the opposition leader were beaten during the raid despite posing no threat.

The party also alleged that officers entered the compound without lawful justification and set up temporary structures, suggesting plans for an extended presence.

Concerns were raised about Bobi Wine’s safety after reports emerged that a helicopter had landed nearby, allegedly to facilitate his forceful removal.Uganda’s police leadership has rejected the claims, dismissing them as false and meant to tarnish the image of state security agencies.

Authorities insist that no abduction took place and that the reports are misleading.

The incident unfolded against the backdrop of wider unrest linked to the election period. Earlier the same day, clashes were reported at the home of a legislator allied to Bobi Wine, where several people reportedly lost their lives.

Police and opposition figures have given sharply different versions of what happened, deepening mistrust.
