Former Likuyani MP Enoch Kibunguchy’s death sparks concern over suspected food poisoning

Family members of the late former Likuyani Member of Parliament Enoch Kibunguchy are struggling to come to terms with his sudden death and are now asking authorities to fully investigate what happened in his final days.

They believe there are unanswered questions surrounding his illness and eventual passing, which they say do not add up based on the information they were given by doctors.

Speaking at Kibunguchy’s rural home in Kakamega County, relatives explained that he had been in his usual state before he suddenly fell sick.

The family tried to manage his condition from home, believing it could be a common illness. However, his health continued to worsen despite their efforts, forcing them to seek urgent medical help.

According to his nephew, the family initially suspected that the former legislator might have been suffering from a condition such as high blood pressure or another long-term illness.

This assumption changed after doctors conducted medical tests and informed them that the illness was linked to food poisoning.

The diagnosis left the family shocked and deeply concerned, prompting them to begin questioning what could have led to such a situation.

The family noted that once the food poisoning diagnosis was made, they started reflecting on Kibunguchy’s recent activities and meals, trying to understand how he could have been exposed. What troubled them most was the seriousness of the illness and how quickly his condition declined, which they say does not match what they understand to be typical food poisoning cases.

Despite receiving medical attention, Kibunguchy’s health continued to deteriorate. Doctors reportedly informed the family that the poison had severely affected several vital organs.

The complications became more serious, with the former MP developing kidney failure, internal bleeding in the intestines, and breathing difficulties.

Relatives said the situation was emotionally draining, as doctors regularly updated them on the worsening condition. They described moments when medical staff would explain that they were dealing with multiple organ complications at the same time, leaving little room for improvement.

The family said they sympathized with the doctors, who appeared to be doing everything possible under very difficult circumstances. What has raised more concern is the aggressive nature of the illness.

The family insists that the intensity of the symptoms and the speed at which they escalated require a deeper investigation. While they claim to have additional details, they said they have chosen not to share them publicly, leaving the matter in the hands of investigators.

Kibunguchy eventually passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Eldoret, bringing an end to a long and painful period for his family. His death has left a significant gap not only within his household but also among residents who knew him through his years of public service.

Enoch Kibunguchy was 72 years old at the time of his death. He entered Parliament after succeeding the late Cyrus Jirongo as Lugari MP, serving from 2003 to 2007. He later represented Likuyani Constituency for two consecutive terms between 2013 and 2022.
