The early hours of December 13, 2025, brought tragedy to the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway when former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo lost his life in a severe road accident.
The crash occurred around 3:00 a.m. in the Naivasha area, according to Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo. Witnesses describe the scene as devastating, with twisted metal and shattered glass marking the spot where the collision happened.
Jirongo, a seasoned political figure who served in President Moi’s cabinet and represented Lugari for two non-consecutive terms, was reportedly driving himself to his rural home in Kakamega when his vehicle collided head-on with a Climax Coach bus.
Both the Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama and relatives of Jirongo confirmed the nature of the crash. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the impact was so severe that Jirongo was pronounced dead at the scene.
This incident underscores the issue facing Kenyan roads, particularly the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, which has long been identified as a high-risk area for serious accidents. Drivers traveling during early morning hours are especially vulnerable, as reduced visibility and fatigue contribute to higher chances of collisions.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, reminding the public that even brief lapses can have tragic consequences.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with police seeking to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the collision. Preliminary reports indicate that speed, timing, and road conditions may all have played a role, but a full report is expected once all evidence is reviewed. Families and political associates of Jirongo have expressed deep sorrow at the sudden loss, highlighting the void left in both his community and national politics.
Jirongo’s death brings to an end a long political career marked by influence and service since the 1990s.
His involvement in national matters and local governance earned him recognition, though his tenure was often accompanied by spirited debate and controversy. Colleagues remember him as a figure who left a significant imprint on Kenyan politics, making his passing even more notable.
The recovery of the wreckage and the confirmation of his death illustrate the harsh realities of road safety in Kenya. Officials continue to call for stronger measures, public awareness, and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
