Quickmart Kakamega workers speak out over harsh shifts and unfair treatment

Staff at the Kakamega branch of Quickmart are now speaking out after growing frustration over what they describe as unfair working conditions and stressful treatment inside the supermarket.

The situation has especially affected the bakery section, where employees say the pressure has become unbearable and the management style has made their daily routine more difficult than it should be.

Many of the workers feel that the environment has slowly turned into a place where their concerns are ignored and their effort is taken for granted, creating a sense of fear and exhaustion among the team.

Cyprian Is Nyakundi was approached by one of the employees, who asked for anonymity due to fear of retaliation. The staff member explained that the bakery team has been dealing with erratic shifts, extended working hours, and canceled off days without any valid explanation.

The employee said, “Hello Cyprian. Please hide my identity. I’m a staff at Quickmart Kakamega, where our manager is unfair to the bakery staff and is harassing our team. He doesn’t follow company shifts. We are supposed to work from 6 am to 4 pm, but he sometimes changes it with no reason. Sometimes we leave at 7 pm, and some of us have families to take care of. For example, we have a case where we haven’t had a day off since last month. He canceled our off days without reason. Although he is suspended, the acting manager is not even managing how we can continue with our offs. We’re tired as a fresh team, especially since we mostly deal with ovens, fryers, and heavy bags of flour. Please help us, my brother.”

This statement paints a worrying picture of what the staff have been going through. Working in a bakery is already physically demanding, with employees handling hot ovens, heavy equipment, and large quantities of ingredients every day.

When shifts stretch beyond official hours, the workload becomes even harder to manage. Workers say the long hours leave them drained, both physically and mentally, and many feel they no longer have enough time to rest or take care of their families.

The cancellation of off days has made the situation worse, as people who expected at least one day to recover are forced back to work without clear communication.

The suspension of the manager had raised hopes among the bakery staff that conditions would improve, but according to the workers, nothing has changed. The acting manager has not addressed the issue of off days or shift fairness, leaving the team feeling abandoned and unsupported.

They say they are working with fear and confusion because they do not know when they will get time to rest or whether their shifts will suddenly change again. This lack of structure has created instability for staff who only want fair treatment and predictable schedules.

The workers say all they want is to be treated with dignity and to have their concerns taken seriously. They believe that proper shift planning, clear communication, and respect for off days would go a long way in restoring order and giving them a humane working environment.

Many of them joined the company with hopes of stable employment, but the current situation has made their daily life stressful and uncertain.

They hope that by speaking out, Quickmart’s leadership will take action and ensure that the Kakamega team is protected, respected, and given the fair working conditions they deserve.
