President William Ruto has called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Council at 10am, followed by a special Cabinet meeting at 2:30pm.
The sudden move comes shortly after reports confirmed the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a leader whose influence has shaped Kenya’s politics for decades.
The atmosphere across government offices and the country remains heavy as officials and citizens await further communication from top state organs.
At Parliament, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula adjourned the Wednesday morning session, saying that lawmakers would reconvene in the afternoon. He noted that he would make an important announcement during the 2:30pm sitting, hinting at the gravity of the situation facing the nation.
“I will invoke my authority under standing order number one and direct as follows. The sitting of this house is adjourned. We will have a sitting at 2:30pm this afternoon when the Speaker will give you some important communication,” he stated.
The day’s events have created a sense of uncertainty as Kenyans await official statements and guidance from the country’s leadership.
The convening of both the National Security Council and the Cabinet on the same day highlights the weight of the moment, as the government prepares to address the nation and manage the unfolding situation.
