In Kenya’s fast-moving social media space, even a simple photo can trigger heated debate. This is exactly what happened when a young medical intern, Dr. Nyarsakwa, posted a picture of herself standing next to a sleek Range Rover with the caption, “small girl, big machine.”
What looked like an innocent post quickly drew attention from online users who linked the car to Dr. Dennis Miskellah, the Deputy Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union.
People noticed the background of her photo matched a place where Dr. Miskellah had also posed before, sparking claims that the luxury car belonged to him and raising questions about whether the two share more than just a professional connection.
Dr. Miskellah is a well-known figure in the health sector. As a senior official of KMPDU, he has been actively involved in pushing for better working conditions for doctors, pharmacists, and dentists.
He studied medicine and specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, completing his residency between 2016 and 2023. Over the years, he has spoken openly about the challenges in healthcare, pointing out that interns make up almost a third of the medical workforce and that the system is overstretched.
He has also criticized gaps in government healthcare policies, such as those tied to the Social Health Authority, arguing that while the plans may meet basic needs, they fail to address bigger issues that affect both doctors and patients.
His reputation as a strong union leader has made him respected among medics, but this time his name is trending for reasons far removed from healthcare.
The online frenzy grew when users dug up an old tweet from Dr. Nyarsakwa where she once bragged about receiving Ksh 100,000 from a man only a day after meeting him.
In that post, she told men to “date according to your Mpesa balance,” which critics saw as bold and controversial.
Linking this to the Range Rover photo, many accused her of flaunting her lifestyle while others claimed she might be benefitting from her alleged closeness to Dr. Miskellah.
Some online comments even suggested that the car was a reward linked to recent doctors’ strikes, turning a personal matter into a public joke. Memes and posts quickly flooded platforms, reflecting how quickly Kenyans can turn gossip into a viral sensation.
Dr. Nyarsakwa, who has a growing following on X, has shared several posts about her life as a doctor, but none attracted as much attention as this one. Meanwhile, Dr. Miskellah has not responded publicly to the speculation, choosing instead to stay focused on union duties.
He continues to attend meetings and engage on healthcare policies, showing that his main priority remains the welfare of doctors and patients. Still, the chatter around his personal life has not died down, highlighting how difficult it is for public figures to separate work from private matters in the digital age.
This controversy is a clear example of how easily private lives can become public conversations in Kenya. Social media thrives on speculation, and once people sense a story involving wealth, power, and possible romance, it spreads quickly.
While the truth about the Range Rover remains unclear, what is certain is that the debate has shifted attention from Dr. Miskellah’s professional contributions to rumors about his private affairs. For many observers, it shows the double-edged nature of visibility, where achievements in leadership are sometimes overshadowed by gossip.
