Another patient found murdered inside KNH as questions grow over long-standing security failures

Another life has been lost inside Kenyatta National Hospital under suspicious circumstances, pointing to a worrying trend that the authorities can no longer ignore. On July 17, 2025, a 52-year-old physically disabled man was found dead in Ward Seven, his throat slit.

The man, already vulnerable due to his condition, had gone to the hospital for care but ended up being murdered in his own bed.

The fact that this could happen inside Kenya’s biggest referral hospital has shaken public confidence and raised serious questions about security inside the institution.

According to Cyprian Is Nyakundi, this is not the first time a patient has been murdered in KNH under similar circumstances.

Nyakundi has pointed to a disturbing pattern of killings in the hospital going as far back as November 2015, with another incident as recent as February 2025.

In both those cases, the victims were also murdered violently and the killers were never brought to justice. This latest case has followed the same direction DCI officers are now investigating, and Kilimani Police Commander Patricia Yegon along with DCI’s Hussein Mahat are leading the probe.

CCTV footage is being reviewed, but as usual, no arrests have been made. The KNH management has confirmed the death and is said to be cooperating, but their words offer little comfort to the public. In February 2025, Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, 39, was also found with his throat slit inside KNH.

He had blisters on his back that suggested he hadn’t moved in a while, meaning he too was completely helpless when the attack happened. No one has ever been charged for that murder.

In November 2015, Cosmas Mutunga Kenyatta was killed in an even more brutal manner. He had 42 stab wounds, his skull was fractured, one eye gouged out, and his leg broken.

That case also remains unsolved. These are not random events. They follow a pattern that points to a deep security failure at the hospital.

Patients are being targeted while under medical care, and yet the hospital seems unable or unwilling to put strong preventive measures in place.

The fact that no one has been held responsible over the years only adds to the suspicion. What exactly is happening inside KNH, and why do these murders keep occurring with no answers?

The public is now demanding transparency and urgent reforms. Basic measures like active CCTV monitoring, better-trained security staff, and restricted ward access seem like obvious steps, yet they haven’t been implemented properly.

The silence from the Ministry of Health and government at large has also been loud, especially now that these incidents appear to be repeating without resolution.

What’s more disturbing is the clear pattern in the victims all were either disabled, ill, or immobile, making them easy targets. If KNH cannot guarantee the safety of patients who cannot even walk, then it is no longer a place of healing.

It becomes a place of fear and risk. Families are now left to wonder whether their loved ones will come back alive from a place that should protect them.Until the government, hospital administration, and investigative agencies start taking this matter seriously, patients at KNH will remain vulnerable.

The killers are still free, and unless urgent reforms are made, it is only a matter of time before another body is found in one of the wards.
