Concerns are rising over the leadership of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja after a video surfaced online showing what appeared to be hired goons gathering outside City Hall on the evening of July 6, 2025.
The video, posted by George Diano on X, shows individuals in white outfits standing near the entrance of the Nairobi City County Assembly. The timing of this video, just a day before the Saba Saba protests, has caused alarm among residents and raised serious questions about who is truly in charge of security in the city.
The phrase “goons being prepared for tomorrow’s thuggery” used in the caption has left many Nairobians worried, especially given the painful memories of the June 25 protests where 16 people were killed and over 400 injured.

Most of the violence was blamed on police brutality, but there were also reports that some of the chaos was caused by non-uniformed individuals who attacked demonstrators. Now, with the video placing such people right at the heart of county government premises, Sakaja is once again under fire.
Governor Sakaja has repeatedly denied any connection to goons or their presence during previous protests, but the public is no longer buying his excuses. His claims that such people are brought in from outside Nairobi have not been backed by any real evidence, and the fact that this new group was filmed at City Hall only deepens suspicion.
It’s hard to believe that a governor who wants peace and order would allow people believed to be hired goons to assemble at such a symbolic location without consequence.
His statement calling for peaceful protests on June 24 now appears hollow when compared to what is happening on the ground. Social media is filled with angry comments accusing Sakaja of hypocrisy and double-speak.
People are pointing out that he says one thing in press conferences but allows something entirely different to happen behind closed doors or in this case, right in front of them.
The courts recently rejected Sakaja’s attempt to silence the media over a report linking him to chaos during earlier protests, further casting doubt on his innocence.

His credibility has taken a major hit, and the growing belief is that he either supports the goon activity or has completely lost control over his administration.
Either way, he has failed in his duty to protect Nairobians. The fact that such a serious video was recorded at a government building under his watch shows a clear breakdown in leadership and accountability.
Instead of building trust, Sakaja’s leadership has only added confusion and fear during a time when Nairobians are calling for clarity and safety.Public reactions are not just online. Residents and business owners are preparing for the worst, some planning to stay indoors and others arming themselves to protect property.
The fear is real, and Sakaja’s lack of strong, transparent action has only made things worse. On a day like Saba Saba, which carries so much historical importance for Kenya’s democracy, the presence of suspected goons near City Hall is not just an embarrassment it is an insult to the people of Nairobi.
Governor Sakaja must answer hard questions. Why were those individuals there? Who brought them? And most importantly, why does this keep happening under his leadership?
Nairobi deserves better than a leader who hides behind statements while his city turns into a battleground.
