Meshack Ojwang’s account clashes with police statement over Albert Ojwang’s final moments

Meshack Ojwang Opiyo, the father of the late X influencer Albert Ojwang, has spoken out after the painful death of his son in police custody. Albert died just hours after he was taken by police from their home in Homa Bay County and transported to Nairobi.

The family is now in deep mourning and searching for answers.Speaking to the press outside Central Police Station in Nairobi on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Meshack shared what happened before his son was arrested. He said that on Saturday, June 7, around 1 p.m., he and his family were eating lunch when he heard the sound of motorbikes coming toward their home.

Curious, he stepped outside to see what was happening. He saw three motorbikes arrive two went behind the homestead while one parked in front. Each bike had two people on it. The visitors then introduced themselves as police officers.

Meshack welcomed the officers, not expecting any trouble. He explained that his son Albert was sitting on a stone nearby when the officers told him they had come for him. The officers made light of the situation, laughing and saying they had come with handcuffs. Meshack said they made a comment suggesting that no one would even be allowed to finish their meal.

His son never got to eat before the police handcuffed him. When Meshack asked the officers what his son had done, they claimed that Albert had badly insulted their boss on platform X. Meshack pressed further, asking who their boss was, but the officers warned him not to ask too many questions.

They told him to follow them to the police station. At that point, Meshack had no choice but to watch as they took Albert away.

He recounted the events in Dholuo and Swahili to reporters, with a heavy heart and clear frustration. His words painted a picture of shock and disbelief. His son was taken in broad daylight, in front of the family, over a social media post.

And now, just a few hours later, he was dead in police custody. There has been no clear explanation from the police about how Albert died, and the family is still waiting for answers.Meshack’s account has raised serious questions about the way the arrest was handled and what may have happened to Albert after he was taken.

Many Kenyans on social media and in human rights groups are demanding justice. The family is grieving, and Meshack’s words show just how painful and confusing this experience has been for them. They are left wondering why Albert was targeted, what really happened, and whether they will ever see justice for their son.

The police have issued statement on the same claiming that Albert injured himself on the wall but this statement seems to conflict with what Albert’s father was saying after visiting the Nairobi funeral home.

We the media fraternity and the public at large must come together and demand for Justice for the young life lost. Albert was a teacher and the only son.
