Officers deployed for Madaraka day in Homa Bay cry foul over unfair pay disparities

Police officers who took part in the recent Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay are expressing anger and frustration after they were allegedly paid much less than they were promised. The officers were sent to Homa Bay as early as May 28 to prepare for the June 1 national event. They say they spent days training in the sun, marching for long hours, and doing everything required to make the celebrations a success.

Despite all the effort they put in, they claim they were paid only Ksh 10,000 without any official explanation or record. This amount is said to be far below what they were supposed to get. According to some of the officers, they were entitled to a night-out allowance of Ksh 4,300 per day.

Since they stayed in Homa Bay for 32 days, they believe they should have been paid more than Ksh 130,000. Instead, they only received a flat cash payout of Ksh 10,000, which many feel is a big insult considering the work they did and the time they spent away from their homes and families.

To make matters worse, officers from other uniformed services who were also present in Homa Bay are said to have received proper allowances ranging between Ksh 25,000 and Ksh 35,000. This has made many police officers feel that they are being treated unfairly.

Some say this is not the first time they are facing such discrimination during national events, but the situation in Homa Bay has left them especially disappointed. They believe this kind of unequal treatment shows that police officers are not respected or valued as much as their counterparts in other units.

One officer who spoke anonymously said the matter needs urgent attention. “Hello. Please hide my ID. Please raise the issue of Kenya police officers who paraded at Homa Bay for Madaraka Day celebration from 28th May to 1st June. Their allowances have been stolen, and they were only given 10K cash from a night out of Ksh 4,300 per day for 32 days. Their colleagues from other services have been paid fair dues between 25K–35K,” the officer said.

This incident has left many officers feeling short-changed and demoralized. They say it is time for the government to address the issue of fair treatment for all officers who serve during national assignments. Without accountability and transparency in how allowances are handled, officers fear that more cases of missing or stolen payments will continue.

Many are now calling for investigations into what happened in Homa Bay and for those responsible for the missing allowances to be held accountable.
