Quickmart Kiambu has now become the latest branch to face serious complaints from workers about poor treatment and toxic leadership. According to current and former employees, the working conditions at this branch have become unbearable under a senior manager known as Mr. Mathenge.
Instead of promoting teamwork and professionalism, staff say he runs the branch through fear, insults, and intimidation, creating a workplace where dignity and respect are missing. This problem at the Kiambu branch is not new or isolated. Across many Quickmart outlets such as Ruaka, Pioneer CBD, Mayfair Kisumu, and Rongai, workers have raised similar concerns.
The same issues keep coming up: workers being overworked, paid poorly, shouted at, and threatened if they complain. Managers who are supposed to support their teams end up being the very source of stress and abuse. Many supervisors don’t help either.

They stand by doing nothing while junior staff are overwhelmed with too much work. In Kiambu, Mr. Mathenge is accused of shouting at staff in front of customers, using harsh and disrespectful language, and claiming that he is protected by the so-called deep state.
This has made staff feel helpless because they believe any attempt to report him will not bring change. Instead of leading with care and encouraging his team, employees say Mr. Mathenge enjoys creating a climate of fear.
Many feel like they are walking on eggshells every day they show up to work.Despite these ongoing complaints and public exposure of these practices, Quickmart’s main office has not made any meaningful changes to address the situation. The toxic culture continues to spread as those in charge remain silent.
Workers are asking how many more branches need to raise the alarm before someone listens. They say they are tired of the silence, tired of the suffering, and tired of working in an environment where abuse is normalized.
One employee who spoke to Cyprian Nyakundi on condition of anonymity described the situation clearly. They said the problem is not just with one person but with a failed system of leadership.
According to this worker, Mr. Mathenge is no leader but a “monster” who openly disrespects his team and makes work unbearable. Supervisors under him have become just as uncaring, turning a blind eye to suffering. Workers are made to work extra hours without pay and any concerns raised are ignored or shut down.

The employee added that what used to be a place of cooperation has now turned into a source of anxiety and sadness. Morale is very low, and many dread reporting to work. This toxic culture doesn’t just hurt employees it damages the Quickmart brand and affects customer service too.
They called on the top bosses at Quickmart to listen to them and replace the current management with people who understand real leadership those who value respect, fairness, and integrity.
The message from staff is clear: they don’t want special treatment. They simply want a workplace where they are treated like human beings.
They want to feel safe, respected, and heard. Until that happens, the rot in Quickmart will continue to grow, and more branches will join the list of shame.
The time has come for action not words. The leadership must change if the company hopes to keep the trust of its employees and customers.
