KCA University is now facing growing criticism from students after announcing new financial penalties targeting those who have not completed unit registration or paid at least 50% of their semester fees by May 23, 2025.
In an email sent out to students, the institution stated that from June 1st, any student who fails to meet the stated conditions will face a 5% surcharge on their total semester billing, along with a fixed penalty of Ksh 1,500.
The move has been described by many as harsh, especially given that the semester is still in its early stages and many students are still trying to raise the needed funds.
As families across Kenya continue to deal with economic pressures brought on by inflation, job losses, and a generally unstable economy, students feel that the university’s decision shows a lack of empathy and understanding.

For those coming from low-income backgrounds, paying university fees has always been a struggle. The added threat of financial penalties only worsens their burden and may even force some to drop out.The main complaint from students is that the penalties are being introduced too early in the semester when many are still organizing how to pay their school fees.
Some say they had not expected such a measure to be implemented so fast, especially when the institution should understand the financial struggles faced by many of its learners. The timing of this decision has raised questions about the university’s priorities, with many accusing it of putting profit before education.
The backlash has been building on social media, with several students sharing screenshots and messages calling out the administration for being insensitive. Some have even tagged influencers and bloggers in a bid to get attention and raise awareness of their plight.
The university, however, has yet to respond publicly to the criticism.A student who wished to remain anonymous shared their experience with Cyprian Nyakundi, a well-known online figure who often highlights such issues.

Below is the exact message from the student as shared:
“Hello Cyprian. KCA University has sent us this email saying that they will fine us 5% of the total semester billing+1500 fixed amount. This applies to some of us who have not been able to pay the first installment yet we’re literally in the first month of the semester. These are hard times and KCA University is giving us baseless penalties that most of us might not be able to pay probably. Please hide ID. That is a message from a student.”
This message captures the frustration and helplessness felt by many students caught in this situation. As more learners speak out, the university may be forced to review this policy, especially if public pressure continues to mount. For now, though, the penalties remain in place, and many students are left with anxiety and uncertainty about their academic future.
