Igegania hospital blamed as family loses child over delayed treatment

A heartbreaking incident at Igegania Hospital in Gatundu North, Kiambu County on Tuesday evening has sparked public anger and renewed concerns over the state of healthcare in public hospitals.

A child died under unclear circumstances, and witnesses say negligence by medical staff may have played a direct role in the death. What was meant to be a place of treatment and safety ended up being a scene of helplessness and pain for one family.

Cyprian Is Nyakundi shared the matter on X, including a video showing the child’s father walking through the hospital with the lifeless body of his child. In the video, the man is visibly distressed, accusing the staff of ignoring his cries for help and failing to act in time to save the child.

He is seen shouting at hospital workers and confronting a security guard who tried to manage the situation. The father’s grief and anger were captured in front of other patients and staff who stood watching, unsure of what to do.

According to people familiar with what happened, the child had been brought to the hospital earlier that day and waited for hours before dying. They claim that medical personnel delayed offering care, even as the child’s condition worsened. These claims raise serious questions about how the hospital is being run and whether staff are following basic procedures when emergencies come in.

It is not the first time complaints have been raised about slow response and poor handling of patients at public health facilities, but this case has drawn national attention because of how it unfolded.

The responsibility lies with the hospital. A child should not wait for hours in a health facility without attention, especially if their condition is serious. Whether it was understaffing, poor coordination, or a simple lack of concern, the hospital failed that child and the family.

That failure is not just emotional it is operational. Hospitals have a duty to act quickly in medical emergencies, and in this case, Igegania Hospital did not.

Authorities must step in to find out exactly what happened, who was on duty, and why action was not taken in time. If there was negligence, disciplinary action should follow. This case should not be handled through press statements and apologies.

A proper investigation is necessary. Igegania Hospital owes the public more than silence. It owes the truth, and more importantly, it owes every patient the assurance that they will be treated with the seriousness and urgency they deserve.
