Brother of slain MP claims Raymond Omollo was behind Nairobi shooting

The murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were has caused caused disbelief among Homa Bay County residents and across the country. The situation became even more serious after Were’s brother publicly accused Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo of being behind the killing.

This accusation was made during a memorial service held in Homa Bay on May 9, 2025. The emotional outburst caught many by surprise and immediately causing mixed reactions both on the ground and online.

Charles Ong’ondo Were, a second-term ODM MP, was shot dead in Nairobi on April 30. He had just left Parliament and was near the Nairobi Funeral Home when gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on him.

Police said it was a targeted attack and confirmed that he had reported receiving threats in the weeks before his death. His murder shocked the political class and raised many questions about insecurity and possible political rivalry.

During the memorial service, his brother, while addressing mourners, claimed that PS Raymond Omollo had a hand in the killing. He linked the murder to political differences and warned that the truth would eventually come out. His statement caused commotion among those in attendance, especially in a region that has strong political emotions.

On X, a post and the video shared by Cornelius Rono highlighted the mood by stating that Homa Bay was “boiling” after the brother’s remarks. The post quickly went viral, attracting thousands of reactions.

Public opinion on the matter remains divided. Some Kenyans believe the brother’s claims, pointing to Were’s history of threats and his political stance. Others have defended PS Omollo, saying the accusations are baseless and politically motivated.

A number of online users warned against rushing to conclusions, especially during mourning. Some even accused certain political factions of using the moment to settle scores or create instability ahead of future elections.

PS Omollo has not directly responded to the accusations but earlier called for calm and promised that investigations would be carried out thoroughly. He mentioned that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is handling the case and that top police officials have been assigned to it. His role as the person in charge of internal security puts him under public spotlight, and this accusation has only added more pressure on his office.

The tension in Homa Bay remains high, and local leaders are trying to calm the situation. However, the region is known for deep political ties, especially to ODM, and some believe this accusation might be linked to a wider political agenda.

There have even been whispers of a plot to push Omollo out of office, something that former police spokesperson Charles Owino also hinted at recently.

The International Parliamentary Union has already condemned the killing and demanded a transparent investigation. Kenyans are watching closely to see if justice will be done, especially now that a top government official has been accused.

The murder of Charles Ong’ondo Were is a tragedy, but the way it is handled will either help heal the country or tear it further apart.

This also comes after reports emerged of an attempted murder against Homa Bay deputy governor Magwanga at his home, Kasipul the same constituency Were was heading before his murder further complicating the matter.
