Margaret Jesang Hutchinson’s role in the UoN land scandal that has shocked the Nation

The ongoing land scandal at the University of Nairobi has exposed the role of Prof. Margaret Hutchinson, also known as Jesang, in overseeing what is now confirmed as a blatant land grab.

From the moment she was installed as acting vice chancellor, questions arose about her real purpose at the institution. Now, with UASU confirming that university land has already been handed over to private individuals, it is clear that she was brought in to facilitate this corruption.

Jesang’s appointment was suspicious from the start. The removal of Prof. Stephen Kiama was not just about leadership changes it was part of a well-planned strategy to remove any obstacles to the land deals.

Kiama had been vocal in protecting the university’s interests, which made him a target. Once he was out, Jesang took over, and the looting began.

This was followed by the attempt to remove Prof. Amukowa Anangwe as university council chair in February, another move meant to clear the way for those behind the land grab. Now, the damage is done.

The university’s land is gone, and those who raised concerns earlier have been proven right. Jesang sat at the helm while this happened, fully aware of the illegal transactions taking place. Instead of protecting the institution, she worked in the interests of those grabbing its resources.

Her role in this scandal is undeniable, and she must be held accountable. This is not just about one piece of land, it is a pattern of corruption that is destroying public institutions. Under Jesang’s leadership, the University of Nairobi has been looted like a personal property.

What has happened here is no different from what has been witnessed at other universities that have lost land and resources to corrupt cartels.

Yet, instead of stopping these crimes, she facilitated them. Jesang’s actions have proven that she is not fit to lead a university. She was not appointed to improve education or protect the institution’s interests she was placed there to oversee the land grab, and she delivered exactly that.

The consequences of this theft will be felt for years, as the university loses valuable land while a few individuals walk away with millions. If nothing is done, this will set a dangerous precedent for other public institutions. Jesang and those behind her must face the law for their role in this theft. Universities should be places of learning, not playgrounds for corrupt leaders. What happened under her leadership is a disgrace, and those responsible must be held to account.
