Celine Dion made a triumphant return to the stage at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, marking her first live performance in four years.
The Canadian superstar, who revealed her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) in 2022, delivered a powerful rendition of Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’Amour” atop the Eiffel Tower, capping off the four-hour event with a stirring climax.
The 56-year-old “queen of power ballads” performed solo, dispelling earlier rumors of a duet with Lady Gaga.
Her solo performance highlighted her encouraging recovery after extensive therapy to rebuild her voice, which had been affected by SPS, a rare neurological disorder causing muscle spasms.
Accompanied by a pianist on the first level of the Eiffel Tower beneath giant illuminated Olympic rings, Dion’s performance was met with widespread praise.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lauded her, stating, “Celine is a Canadian icon, an incredible talent, and she overcame a lot to be there tonight. It’s great to see you singing again.”
Dion’s comeback follows a surprise appearance at the Grammys six months ago and comes as she hints at a new Las Vegas residency.
In June, she told the BBC, “We have been working so hard to put this show together – because I’m back.” Dion holds the record for the most successful residency of all time on the Las Vegas Strip.
Her struggles with SPS were recently highlighted in the documentary “I Am: Celine Dion,” which has become Amazon Prime Video’s most successful documentary ever.
The film sheds light on her journey with the disorder and her relentless efforts to return to the stage.
Dion’s fans in France, where her 1995 album “D’eux” remains the best-selling French-language album of all time, were especially thrilled by her return.
The emotional performance in Paris not only marked a significant milestone in her career but also served as an inspiring testament to her resilience and enduring talent.
Celine Dion’s comeback performance at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony was a moment of triumph, showcasing her remarkable journey of recovery and reaffirming her status as one of the world’s most beloved performers.
